[ History
]
The first Kiwanis club
was organized in Detroit,
Michigan, USA
on January 21, 1915. A year later the Kiwanis Club of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, was chartered, and
Kiwanis International grew rapidly into a leading service club in these two
founding nations. In 1962, worldwide expansion was approved, and today
Kiwanis clubs are active in every part of the world.
The Kiwanis Club of Broussard/Youngsville is one of
the newest clubs in Division 7 of the Louisiana-Mississippi-West
Tennessee District of Kiwanis International, having been organized on August
14, 2001. The club was built and is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of
Acadiana/ Lafayette.

[ Women in Kiwanis ]
Membership was opened
to women in 1987. Overall, there are now more than 51,000 women members, and
1 in 7 club presidents is a woman.
Our club is a truly "co-ed", in fact, the
charter President of the club was a woman and women continue to take active
roles in leadership.

[ Kiwanis youth organizations ]
Kiwanis International
sponsors several service clubs for young people: Circle K International has
10,800 members on 560 university and college campuses; Key Club International
has 194,000 members in 4,574 high schools; and Builders Clubs have been
organized in 2,000 junior high and middle schools.
Though our club does not officially sponsor a K-family
organization yet, we actively support the University of Louisiana
at Lafayette's
Circle K International (CKI) chapter with both human and financial resources.

[ Kiwanis service ]
In one year, Kiwanis
clubs sponsored 147,000 service projects. To do so, Kiwanians raised and
spent almost $70 million and contributed 6.2 million hours of volunteer time.
Kiwanis' continuing service emphasis is called
"Young Children: Priority One," which focuses on the special needs
of children from prenatal development to age 5. Projects conducted as part of
the "Young Children: Priority One" service emphasis involved
$14.3 million and 1.3 million volunteer hours.
In 1994, Kiwanis launched its first Worldwide
Service Project, a $75 million campaign in partnership with UNICEF to
eliminate iodine deficiency disorders (IDD) by the year 2000. Iodine
deficiency is rare in areas where iodized salt is used, but in other parts of
the world, IDD is the leading cause of preventable mental and physical
retardation. As many as 1.5 billion people are at risk, especially young
children.
The Kiwanis Club of Broussard/Youngsville is dedicated to making
our area a better place to live, work and raise our families. To this
end, our major fund-raising event is held annually, on the first Friday after
Easter. Folks have come to enjoy our "FIRST FRIDAY (...after
Lent) PO BOY SALE"
where we cook and serve approximately 1,000 sausage po-boy
lunches.
Proceeds from this and other fund-raising events are
generally dedicated to selected programs and projects administered by the
area schools. In 2002, Po-Boy/Peanut Day proceeds went to technology
projects in the area elementary schools; in 2003, proceeds were dedicated to
reading on the elementary level.
Along with these fund-raising service projects, our members
are often involved in direct "hands on" service projects that
affect children and families. You'll see us assisting Toys to Recovery with
toy distribution during the United Way of Acadiana Day of Caring; decorating
pumpkins with the residents of Maison de Mere, the
local home for teen moms; cooking hot dogs and leading craft projects with
the teenagers at Acadiana Shelter for Girls; "Santa Sorting" with
the US Marine Corps during the Toys for Tots drive... and lots more!!
We may be a small club by membership number standards, but we
are MIGHTY COMMITTED to making a difference!! ...and do!

[Objects of Kiwanis]
The six permanent
Objects of Kiwanis International were approved by Kiwanis club delegates at
the 1924 Convention in Denver,
Colorado. Through the
succeeding decades, they have remained unchanged.
- To give primacy to the human and spiritual
rather than to the material values of life.
- To encourage the daily living of the Golden
Rule in all human relationships.
- To promote the adoption and the application of
higher social, business, and professional standards.
- To develop, by precept and example, a more intelligent,
aggressive, and serviceable citizenship.
- To provide, through Kiwanis clubs, a practical
means to form enduring friendships, to render altruistic service, and to
build better communities.
- To cooperate in creating and maintaining
that sound public opinion and high idealism which make possible the
increase of righteousness, justice, patriotism, and goodwill.
